CAIWU is seeking to hire an enthusiastic and committed person to join its legal department as a caseworker (part-time). Applications are open until June 17th.
The Cleaners and Allied Independent Workers Union (CAIWU) is seeking to hire an enthusiastic and committed person to join its legal department as a part-time caseworker (with the opportunity of becoming full-time in January 2025). CAIWU is a grassroots, member-led trade union for cleaners. We organise workplaces, campaign for better conditions for cleaners, and assist members with employment-related issues.
The role involves managing CAIWU's pool of legal volunteers, and representing cleaners at internal company hearings with some opportunity to represent claimants in the Employment Tribunal.
The role is an excellent opportunity for aspiring lawyers to work on their own employment tribunal cases and build the skills necessary for a successful legal career. Many of our past caseworkers have gone on to secure pupillage at top Chambers. You will be expected to work 2.5 days a week, with a prorated salary of £28,000 per annum, rising to £31,200 on successful completion of a 3-month probationary period. The expected start date for this role is the 1st of September 2024.
The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background, have completed the Bar Course or equivalent and be committed to the trade union ethos. Our hiring process has three stages: a paper sift, a written legal problem, and an interview. Candidates will be assessed against the following criteria:
• Academics.
• Relevant legal experience.
• Ability to work under pressure; and
• Commitment to the trade union ethos.
• Language skills, particularly the ability to speak Spanish, are strongly desired but not necessary.
Those seeking to apply are invited to send a CV of no more than 2 pages and a cover letter detailing suitability for and commitment to the role of no more than a page to legal.office@caiwu.org.uk (CC in alberto.durango@caiwu.org.uk) by Monday 17th of June 2024. Candidates invited to interview will be notified by email on the 20th of June. At that time, those candidates invited to interview will be provided with the legal problem. We expect to hold interviews between the 27th of June and the 2nd of July.
If you require any reasonable adjustments or wish to have any mitigating circumstances considered please email legal.office@caiwu.org.uk
