Protests planned outside the London Elizabeth Hotel for the failure to pay CAIWU member, Betty Ulloa, nearly £5,000 in lost earnings

On Saturday 1st April, the Cleaners and Allied Independent Workers Union (CAIWU) will begin its campaign against Pridegreen Limited with a protest outside the London Elizabeth Hotel for their failure to pay CAIWU member, Betty Ulloa, nearly £5,000 in lost earnings.

Betty Ulloa was employed by Pridegreen Limited since 2011 as a chambermaid at the London Elizabeth Hotel in Lancaster Terrace, by Hyde Park. In 2020 she was furloughed along with her colleagues, but her employer (Pridegreen Limited) did not pay the 80% of her salary as it was required to do under the furlough scheme. Instead during the entire year that Ms Ulloa was on furlough she only received 42% of her salary.

In February 2021 Ms Ulloa, supported by CAIWU, took her case to the employment tribunal and was awarded just under £5,000 in lost earnings. However, despite the judgment, Pridegreeen Limited still refuses to pay the monies owed. CAIWU is therefore staging protests outside the London Elizabeth Hotel every Saturday from 1st April at 2pm.

Alberto Durango, General Secretary of CAIWU, stated:
“This company and its owners are millionaires, Betty is not asking to be given anything for free, she is demanding to be paid her hard-earned wages. She won in the employment tribunal over 2 years ago and yet this company is not willing to pay her. I call on all the UK public to force this company to pay Betty's debt and to take this as an example so that no company steals wages from its workers.”
